课程描述(COURSE DESCRIPTION)
This course is an introductory course to the study of language. It deals with topics that an English major or teacher should KNOW about language and the different subfields of LINGUISTICS, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and text /discourse analysis, as well as the different methods employed in the study, analysis, and understanding of language in each subfield.

By the end of this course, the student is expected to be able to:
1. talk about language/linguistic matters in an objective and informed manner
2. possess greater awareness of language and language use
3. state the general principles for describing the phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics of a language
4. do basic phonological, grammatical, and text/discourse analysis of language samples
5. discuss the contributions of linguistics to more effective language teaching and learning

教学方法(METHODOLOGY)
Regular class sessions involve lecture, discussion based on reading, Presentation of Cooperating Learning in a group work, Task-based learning, assignments, short essays, and quizzes. The short essays are required to choose 3 topics from the textbook, which you want to discuss or share your opinions with class or your partners; simultaneously the essays are complete by group work. The assignments/short essays should be expected to be typed less than 3 pages long, double-space, 12-pt Times Roman font, one-inch margin on all sides and printed on A4 paper.

Regular class attendance; active participation in class discussion; Presentation with PPT; prompt submission of assignments; quizzes; short essays; final exam
学期评估分制(ASSESSMENT)
总成绩=学期考试70% + 平时成绩占30% (出勤,作业,测验,课堂呈现)
