Passage A

I was born in the city of York, in England, in the year 1632. My father was a man of some wealth, able to give me a good home and send me to school. It was his wish that I should be a layer but my head began to be filled very early with thoughts of travel, and I would be satisfied with nothing but going to sea. My father gave me strong advice against it, but with little effect. One day, being at Hull, I met a school-fellow who was about to sail for London in his father’s ship, and he invited me to go with him, and without telling my father, I went on board.

On the way to London, a storm arose, the ship was wrecked (失事), and we barely escaped with our lives. I went on foot to London, where I met with the master of a vessel which did business with countries on the coast of Africa. He took a fancy to me, and offered me a chance to go with him on his voyages, which I gladly accepted.

A great storm came up, and the ship was tossed (被颠簸) about for many days, until we did not know where we were. Suddenly we struck a bank of sand, and the sea broke over the ship in such a way that we could not hope to have her hold many moments without breaking into pieces. So we launched (使下水) a boat. After we had been driven four or five miles, a mountainous wave struck us so hard that it overturned the boat at once. Though I swam well, the waves were so strong that I was dashed (被猛撞) against a rock with such force that it left me senseless. But I recovered a little before the waves returned, and running forward, got to the mainland safely.

31.   What did the author want to do most when he was young?

Passage B

There are a lot of stock (股票) markets in large cities in many countries. Stock markets in Paris, London, Tokyo, Shanghai and New York are among the largest and most well-known. The stock market, also called exchange, is a place where people can buy or sell shares of a factory or a company. And each share means certain ownership of a factory or a company.

Different people go to stock markets. Some are rich, who want to get more money than they have. Others are not rich, who buy stocks and try to become rich. Still others buy stocks as part of their plan to save money.

Of course, investing money in the stock market is not the safest way to make money. No one can tell exactly whether the shares will be doing well. The factory or the company may do badly. Then the stocks will go down, and investors will go down, and investors will lose money. The stock may go up or down for a number of untold reasons. Everyone wants the stock to go up, but sometimes even if a factory or company does a good job, the stock may still go down.

Passage D

Like every language, American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come form the day-to-day life of the people and develop in their own way. Our expression today is “to face the music.”

When someone says, “Well, I guess I’ll have to face the music,” it does not mean he’s planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and that, and why you didn’t do this or that. Sour music indeed, but it has to be faced. At sometime or another, every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember father’s angry voice, “I want to talk to you.” It is only that we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young and old. It is more than 150 years old. And where did this expression come from? One of the explanations comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue (提示) to go on, they often said, “Well, it’s time to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did --- facing the orchestra (交响乐队) which was just below them. An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of an audience that might be friendly or perhaps hostile (不友好的), especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So the expression “to face the music” comes to mean, “having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you know you have no other choice.”

46.   Which of the following is closest in meaning to “sour music” in Paragraph 2?

         A)  A piece of unpleasant music.

         B)  Something unpleasant.

         C)  An unpleasant deal.

         D)  Tough work given by the boss

47.   Where did the expression “to face the music” probably come from?

         A)  It came from a novel written by James Fenimore Cooper.

         B)  It came from actors waiting to go on the stage.

         C)  It came from children who were scolded by their angry father.

         D)  It came from employees who were blamed by their boss.

48.   Which if the following is the definition of the word “wing” in “waiting in the wings to go on the stage”?

         A)  The manner of flying.

         B)  The dressing room in the theater.

         C)  An important way.

         D)  The unseen area on either side of the stage of a theater.

49.   According to the passage, an actor may feel nervous or even frightened on the following occasions except when ________.

         B)  he faces the orchestra which was just below him

         C)  he steps onto the stage in front of an audience

         D)  he cannot remember what he should say on the stage
